PAN MEI CHEN, the Taiwanese pop queen, crooning Cantonese pop songs?
Yes, that will happen soon. The star, who already is one of the top performers on the Mandarin charts in Taiwan, Singapore and Malaysia, will launch her debut Cantopop album in Hongkong by next month.
The album is a collection of melancholic ballads translated from her earlier Mandarin hits.
Says the singer with a half smile: Don't ask me how I sound in Cantonese because I can't grade myself. I am holding my breath till end-October to see the Hongkong audience's reponse.
"In the last few months, I have been working hard on recording this album. It is not easy; I have to learn to pronounce each word in Cantonese from my Hongkong producer, Soh Tak Wah.
"Why Cantonese songs? I told myself I should attempt new things to boost my career, and it is about time I entered the Hongkong market."
This twenty something singer, famous for her androgynous image, was in town for Saturday night's 93.3 FM Hit Awards.
She lost the Most Popular Female Artiste award to relative newcomer Tarcy Su. The other three nominees were Stella Chang and Hongkong star Sandy Lam.
Pan's appeal as a singer is evident. Sources said three bus-loads of fans went to the airport when she flew in last Thursday.
Some were also at the Walk Of Fame Ceremony at Capitol Threatre the next day when Pan, Jacky Cheung, Tarcy Su, Nicky Wu, Kit Chan and Jimmy Ye put their celebrity hand prints in wet cement.
About her look, she says: "I have been in show business for six years and my fans like me because of my special image. I dare say that there is only one Pan Mei Chen in the Taiwanese and Hongkong pop industry.
"Compared with female singers who look demure and wear pretty dresses, I have to made a more lasting impression. Talk about Pan Mei Chen and people would remember her as being cool and full of character.
"Boyfriends? Well, I have had broken relationships and those have given me the experience to sing melancholic songs in a more convincing manner.
"But right now, I have no time for dating and, frankly speaking, no man interests me. My ideal man is someone who is at least three years older and can give me a sense of security."
She says her life now revolves around recording and songwriting. She recently took a six-month vacation in Los Angeles to "recharge my battery"
Three songs in her next Mandarin and Cantonese albums - to be launched simultaneously in Taiwan and Hongkong at the end of next month - were written in the United States.
Writing songs is a breeze for Pan, who says she can complete a song within an hour. To date, she has written more than 100 published songs.
With 10 albums to her name, Pan reckons it is time she moves on. She plans to expand her one-year-old production house to staff at least 20 employees, and she hopes to groom new singers.
Before the award ceremony, Pan told the press: "I did not fly to Singapore to win a music award."
"I happen to have the time and I feel it is a good apportunity to meet fellow singers and my fans."
Pan was not nominated for the award last year and her fans kicked up a big fuss. "What is most important for me is the chance to see my fans and friends again in Singapore."作者: c_run 时间: 2013-5-4 11:01:46 标题: 1994年09月17日,新加坡 第二届933醉心金曲奖颁奖礼
